These are questions for the Economic Geography Unit:
1. Identify and explain 4 Institutions of Economic Development. What are the costs and benefits of dealing with these institutions for the periphery countries? Extra credit if you can relate these institutions to your cultural hearth.
2. Discuss the history of US industrialization and the causes and effects of the shifting economic geography of American manufacturing since the 1970s.
3. Identify and discuss Rostow's stages of development in terms of its assumptions, predictions, strengths, and weaknesses.
4. Support and/or oppose globalization.
5. Economic activities are often categorized as being either primary, secondary, tertiary, or quaternary.
a. What is deindustrialization? How does it fit into this categorization of economic activities from a geographic and development perspective?
b. What are the effects of deindustrialization?
c. How does deindustrialization fit into the global geography of production that has emerged in the last 30 years? What are its backwash effects?

Essential Question: What are the different kinds of states in terms of shape, size, and location and how do these factors affect it?
Activity 1: Construct a 6-column or 6-box graphic organizer and lists different kinds of states mentioned in Barron's under "Territory, Borders, and the Geography of Nations". Entitle each box with the name of a kind of state. Give an example and sketch its shape. You cannot use the ones already drawn in Barron's. At the bottom of the box, state how its shape, size, or location affected its status.
Activity 2: Make a 6-box chart with the following titles: EU; UN; NAFTA: OPEC; NATO; & CIS
Under each title:
a. spell out acronym
b. identify the kind of organization
c. write purpose of organization
d. list three examples

Political Conflict Paper
Research an ethnic conflict either in your hearth or one of the many places around the world.
Summarize the conflict (quote source). Be ready to address the origin of the conflict along with who, what, when, where, how, and results. Was ethnic cleansing or ethnic apartheid involved?
You must use at least 10 geographic vocab. words from Barron's Political Geography chapter. Highlight or underline the words in a 1-2 typed paper due on Friday. I suggest the following paper structure:
Paragraph 1: Describe the state where the ethnic group resides. (Here is your opportunity to use
several vocab words.)
Paragraph 2: Describe the conflict. Transition from the 1st paragraph with something like: "Within the state of _______, resides an enormous amount of tension between _____ and _______." Then summarize the conflict as directed above.
Paragraph 3: Summarize if and how the conflict was resolved. Could the conflict have been resolved in a better, more humanitarian way? If, so how? If the conflict is unresolved, suggest how it could be resolved.
